Crisis in Gaza

“Gaza is being strangled and it seems that the world right now has lost its humanity. If we look at the issue of water – we all know water is life – Gaza is running out of water, and Gaza is running out of life.”

"-- Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of the UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East)"

IMI extends its deepest condolences to impacted families and our global community on the tremendous loss of civilian life in the Middle East. We are gravely concerned with the escalation of violence, the indiscriminate military attacks against civilians, the destruction of health facilities, and the dehumanization of the people of Palestine. We protest upon terrorizing the medics performing their professional duties in saving innocent lives in the conflict zone.

According to the Resources, The number of those killed (currently estimated at 4000) is still increasing. There are also verified reports of deaths of health care workers and destruction of health facilities in Gaza. The WHO has documented 111 attacks on health care in the occupied Palestinian territory since October 7.

Also, Last week Israeli officials ordered a “complete siege” of Gaza---cutting off essential services and supplies including electricity, water, food and fuel.

World Health Organization (WHO) warned Gaza faces an imminent public health crisis as the Palestinian enclave is “running out of water” and the lives of more than 3,500 patients in 35 hospitals in Gaza are at immediate risk.

It’s really about the loss of our humanity if the international community allows this to continue. What we are seeing now is simply inhumane.”

-- Lynn Hastings, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory

Global Repercussions

We are also witnessing an increase in anti-Palestinian, anti-Muslim, Anti-Arab violence, hate crimes and retaliation against any who speak up for those oppressed in Gaza. We are deeply concerned by the silencing of members of these communities at institutions of higher education, the quick and quiet removal of prominent Muslim or Arab journalists as anchors and hosts like Mehdi Hasan, Ayman Mohyeldin and Ali Velshi, the rescinding of job offers, and the general acceptability of discriminatory speech and practices that we see on the rise across the US.

Also a sad incident happened this weekend in Chicago. Wadea Al-Fayoume, a six-year-old Palestinian American boy,who was stabbed 26 times for “being Muslim” in front of his mother who was also stabbed by their 71 year old landlord who came into their home and attacked them with a knife. We extend our sincerest condolences to the family of this innocent 6-year-old child and request prayers for his mother Hanaan Shahin who is still hospitalized, as we all pray for peace, safety, security and accountability for those oppressed globally.
